The luxury vehicle manufacturer Genesis has re-upped its PGA Tour title sponsorship through 2030, the parties announced Tuesday, even as the future of the tour's schedule remains up in the air.
The extension was revealed two days before the annual Genesis Invitational begins at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
'This is a very special year,' Genesis president and CEO Jose Munoz said. 'It's the 100th playing of this tournament, and we are proud to continue our partnership through 2030.'
The Genesis Invitational is hosted by Tiger Woods and his foundation, and it's one of eight $20 million signature events currently on the tour's schedule.
However, the news comes ahead of a widely expected upheaval of the PGA Tour circuit, with rumors of a shorter schedule as soon as 2027 that avoids conflicting with football in January and tries to 'own' the summer.
One idea circulating is that the Genesis will move to August and become part of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Both Woods and Munoz addressed that in press conferences Tuesday. Woods said the weather in California would be much better in August than February.
'That's number one. We're going to have perfect days. It's always perfect in So Cal here in August,' Woods said. 'So yes, we're looking at things like that, looking to go to bigger markets later in the year for the playoffs. Just trying to make our competitive model better, and how do we do that.
'I think that is one of the options you mentioned with Genesis. That certainly is on the table.'
The FedEx Cup playoffs used to feature dates in Boston and the New York metro area, but the current three-tournament edition goes to Memphis -- a much more humid locale in August -- before the annually rotating BMW Championship and the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
'There is a new commissioner, a new CEO in Brian (Rolapp),' Munoz told reporters. 'He's bringing a lot of new ideas, and as Tiger mentioned, you're in the early session. There's a lot of discussions. We are all discussing how we can make this better, and as Tiger mentioned, it needs to be good for everybody, for them, for the sponsors, for the customers, and mainly for the followers.
'I think this is a possibility. We're very open-minded and willing to make things better.'
