San Diego Padres infielder Jose Iglesias received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine and teammate Xander Bogaerts also was fined for their conduct toward umpires after Game 3 of the National League wild-card series in Chicago, Major League Baseball announced Friday.
The incident occurred last week as the umpires walked off the field near the Padres' dugout after San Diego lost 3-1 to end its season.
In the top of the ninth inning, the count was full on Bogaerts when Cubs right-hander Brad Keller threw a fastball that appeared to be well below the strike zone. However, home-plate umpire D.J. Reyburn called it a strike for the first out of the inning.
The usually composed Bogaerts vigorously contested the call to no avail and Padres manager Mike Shildt also came out of the dugout to express his view as well as corral Bogaerts. San Diego later put two runners on base during the inning, adding to the frustration level.
After the contest ended, Iglesias and Bogaerts were among the players in the Padres' dugout who moved toward the umpiring crew and expressed their opinions as the umps hurriedly left the field. Iglesias had to be held back by a teammate as he shouted at Reyburn.
Pending an appeal, Iglesias will serve the suspension on the first day he is an active player in 2026. If he appeals, the discipline will be held in abeyance until the process is over.
