T-shirts are typical casual apparel that we wear on a daily basis. These are normally inexpensive items, but there are some t-shirts that have a very high price tag associated with them. These are the most expensive t-shirts available, and they are often memorabilia from iconic concerts or pop artists. Surprisingly, some of them were even created just for charity auction purposes.

The most costly t-shirt on the market is diamond studded and costs a whopping $400,000. But because diamonds generate value, we'll ignore that one for now. A T-shirt for a good cause is the second most expensive item.

Charity T-Shirts

The next most expensive T-shirt sold at a charity auction was a simple white T-shirt from UNICEF that featured a green airplane dropping relief for the needy. This shirt raised $300,000.

In the next place, we have yet another shirt from UNICEF. Prior to the opening of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, UNICEF worked with Hanes to raise funds for children in war-torn countries through a T-shirt auction. The money raised through the auction of this T-shirt was donated to Olympic-Aid-Atlanta, a non-profit organization that cares for children from war-torn nations. This shirt raised $42,000.

The Grateful Dead T-Shirts

A rock band known as the Grateful Dead was formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960s, at the height of the counterculture movement.

The Grateful Dead's ephemera were the focus of a recent auction at Sotheby's, which took place in New York City. For example, a 1967 Yellow Russell Southern Co. tee with a screen-printed logo, which sold for $17.640 and became the most expensive rock shirt ever sold at auction, was among the pieces up for bidding.

The simple yellow tee, designed by Hells Angel and graphic artist Allan "Gut" Terk, sold for nearly double the price of a Led Zeppelin shirt from the band's Knebworth concert in 1979, which previously held the record for the most expensive shirt ever sold in an eBay auction, fetching $10,000 in 2011.

A total of $19,315.80 was spent on the Grateful Dead item, which was described in superb condition as part of the Sotheby's lot "From the Vault: Property From the Grateful Dead and Friends." Despite the fact that it was produced in relatively tiny quantities, it is regarded as one of the band's earliest mass-produced shirts.

In the same auction, A Dead tee from 1977 was a close second, selling for $15,120 at a November auction. That shirt is from a tour stop at Cornell University in the spring of 1977 and has the Dead's trademark "Steal Your Face" insignia, which depicts the top of a skull with a lightning bolt running through it.

A New Record

The record for the most expensive custom T-shirt ever sold at auction did not last long. On Tuesday, Oct. 19, a Fillmore West jersey. The organist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan's outfit worn on stage by the Grateful Dead during the Sound Storm Festival in Wisconsin in 1970 sold for $21,420 at an auction in New York.
