The Detroit Red Wings acquired goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic from the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday and agreed to terms with him on a two-year contract.
In exchange, the Hurricanes received a third-round pick (94th overall) in the upcoming 2021 NHL Draft and the rights to veteran goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who is a pending unrestricted free agent.
Nedeljkovic, 25, placed third in the Calder Trophy voting and made the 2020-21 All-Rookie Team after going 15-5-3 with three shutouts, a 1.90 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage.
His GAA and save percentage both led the NHL among goalies with at least 10 appearances.
The Hurricanes selected the Parma, Ohio, native in the second round (37th overall) of the 2014 draft. Nedeljkovic made his NHL debut on Jan. 17, 2017, and has a career record of 17-7-4 with a 2.01 GAA and .928 save percentage in 29 games.
Bernier, who turns 33 next month, was 9-11-1 with a 2.99 GAA and .914 save percentage with Detroit in 2021-22.
Bernier is 161-159-39 with 18 shutouts, a 2.77 GAA and .913 save percentage in 394 career games (355 starts) with the Los Angeles Kings (2007-13), Toronto Maple Leafs (2013-16), Anaheim Ducks (2016-17), Colorado Avalanche (2017-18) and Red Wings.
